What Is Enshrouded?

Enshrouded is a co-op survival action RPG by Keen Games for up to 16 players. You play as a Flameborn — the last hope of a fallen civilization — awakened to reclaim the kingdom of Embervale from a mysterious corrupting fog called the Shroud.

Think of it as a blend of Valheim's survival crafting, Zelda's exploration, and a skill-based action RPG combat system. It's been one of Steam's most popular survival games since its January 2024 Early Access launch, with over 4 million copies sold.

First 30 Minutes: Getting Started

Character Creation

Enshrouded's character creator is cosmetic only — appearance doesn't affect gameplay. You can change your look later, so don't stress about it.

The Flame Altar

Your first task is activating the Flame Altar. This is the most important structure in the game:

  • Defines your base territory (build radius)
  • Acts as your respawn point
  • Protects against the Shroud within its radius
  • Upgrades to expand your territory and Shroud timer

Place it on flat ground with room to build around it. You can move it later, but it costs resources.

Gathering Basics

Start by gathering these core resources:

ResourceToolUsed For
WoodAxe (fists work early)Building, fuel, crafting
StonePickaxeBuilding, tools, weapons
Plant FiberHandsString, basic clothing
Berries/MushroomsHandsFood (early survival)

Tip: Always gather more than you think you need. Storage is cheap; running out of materials mid-build is frustrating.

Your First Shelter

Build a basic shelter quickly:

  1. Place a Workbench near your Flame Altar
  2. Craft Stone Blocks and Wood Walls
  3. Build a small enclosed room (4x4 is fine)
  4. Add a Roof to get the "Sheltered" buff (stamina regen)
  5. Place a Campfire for warmth and cooking

You don't need a palace. Functional beats pretty at this stage.

Combat Basics

Weapons

You start with basic weapons. Here's what to know:

  • Melee (sword/axe): Best for most encounters. Learn to dodge between swings.
  • Ranged (bow): Good for pulling single enemies and staying safe. Arrows cost resources.
  • Magic (staff/wand): Unlocks later. Powerful AoE but uses mana.

The Dodge

Dodging is the most important combat skill. When you dodge, you have invincibility frames — you can't take damage during the animation. Time your dodges to avoid big attacks rather than trying to block everything.

Healing

  • Food provides slow health regeneration (eat before fights)
  • Health Potions provide instant healing (craft at an alchemist)
  • Resting at a campfire heals slowly

Tip: Always carry 5+ health potions before exploring. Craft them as soon as you unlock the Alchemist NPC.

The Shroud

The Shroud is Enshrouded's signature mechanic — a fog that covers large parts of the map. When you enter it:

  1. A timer starts counting down (2 minutes initially)
  2. When it hits zero, you die
  3. Exiting the Shroud resets your timer

The Shroud contains the best resources and important bosses. You must venture into it to progress. Here's how to survive:

  • Upgrade your Flame Altar — each level extends your Shroud timer significantly
  • Bring Shroud Survival Flasks — extends your timer by 2 minutes
  • Plan your route before entering — know where you're going and how to get out
  • Don't fight everything — sometimes running past enemies is the smart play

Skill Trees

Enshrouded has three skill trees: Warrior, Ranger, and Mage. You're not locked into one — invest points freely across all three.

Beginner-friendly builds:

  • Melee fighter: Warrior tree for health/damage, grab a sword and shield
  • Archer: Ranger tree for ranged damage and movement speed, use a bow
  • Spellcaster: Mage tree for spell damage, use a staff (unlocks mid-game)

You can respec at the Flame Altar at any time, so experiment freely.

NPCs: Your Key to Progression

As you explore, you'll rescue NPCs trapped in the Shroud. Each one unlocks new crafting recipes:

NPCUnlocksPriority
BlacksmithMetal weapons and toolsHigh
CarpenterAdvanced building materialsHigh
AlchemistPotions and consumablesHigh
HunterRanged weapons and armorMedium
FarmerFood production and cookingMedium

Tip: Prioritize the Blacksmith and Alchemist. Metal tools speed up everything, and potions keep you alive in the Shroud.

Multiplayer: Playing with Friends

Enshrouded supports up to 16 players on a dedicated server. Here's what co-op changes:

  • Enemy scaling: Enemies get more health with more players
  • Shared progression: Flame Altar upgrades, NPC unlocks, and Shroud Roots cleared are shared
  • Individual inventories: Each player has their own inventory and gear
  • Reviving: You can revive downed teammates

Coordination Tips

  • Split resource gathering — one player chops wood, another mines stone
  • Explore the Shroud in pairs — solo Shroud runs are risky
  • Designate a base builder — too many cooks in the base leads to chaos
  • Share consumables — craft extra potions for teammates who forget

Hosting a Server

The easiest way to play with friends is a dedicated server. It runs 24/7 so anyone can play anytime, handles up to 16 players, and saves your world permanently. HostedGG servers are free for 3 days with no credit card.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Ignoring the Flame Altar — upgrade it ASAP. The Shroud timer extension is the biggest quality-of-life improvement in the game.
  2. Hoarding instead of crafting — use your materials. Better gear makes gathering faster.
  3. Fighting everything in the Shroud — your timer is ticking. Be strategic about which fights to take.
  4. Building too much too early — focus on a functional base first. Fancy architecture comes later.
  5. Skipping food — the Sheltered and Well-Fed buffs stack and make a huge difference in combat.
  6. Not bringing backup gear — when you die in the Shroud, you need gear to retrieve your tombstone. Keep a spare set at your Flame Altar.
