Short answer: Whiteout Survival releases heroes in waves called Generations, and a new generation unlocks on your server roughly every 80 days. As a rule newer generation heroes are stronger than older ones, which is why tier lists are organized by gen: the best hero in your generation beats an old top pick.
How generations work
- Heroes are grouped into Generations (Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3, and so on), released in order over the life of a server.
- A fresh generation of heroes becomes available roughly every 80 days on your server, so newer servers cycle through gens as they age.
- Each generation tends to introduce stronger stats and new mechanics. For example, Gen 2 brought tougher frontline durability and game-changing units like Flint.
Why generation matters for tier placement
- The iron rule: newer gens generally outclass older gens. A top hero stays competitive for about 3 to 4 generations before falling off, then gets replaced.
- This is why hero tier lists are split by generation. The right question is not "is this hero S-tier overall" but "is this the best hero available in my generation right now."
- Frontline tanks usually get power-crept first, so the earliest heroes to retire from your lineup are often Gen 1 tanks.
What this means for your investment
- Build the best heroes of your current generation, not yesterday's favorites. Pouring Hero XP and shards into an outdated hero wastes resources.
- Free-to-play players should focus on one key hero per generation and follow a priority path rather than spreading thin.
- Plan to transition lineups as new gens arrive. See the Beginner Guide for early build order, and grab free Hero XP from every active code.
