What to eat in Valheim
Your health and stamina pools come almost entirely from food. Eat three different foods at once for the largest pools, and match the mix to what you are doing: high health for boss fights, high stamina for exploring and building, and Eitr foods once you start casting magic in the Mistlands.
Food buffs last around 20 minutes and slowly tick down, so eat again before the bar empties to keep the buff topped up. You cannot eat the same food twice at once, so variety is the whole game.
How food works
- Each food adds to your max health, max stamina, or max Eitr (or a split between them).
- Three active foods stack, so your real pools come from your best three.
- Better food needs better stations: a Cauldron, then upgrades like the Pots and Pans add-ons, unlock stronger recipes.
- A Fermenter turns ingredients into mead and some advanced foods.
Best food combos by biome
Meadows and Black Forest (early game)
Aim for a balanced trio so you can both take hits and keep swinging.
- Grilled Neck Tail (health and stamina)
- Cooked Boar Meat (health)
- Honey or Mushroom as a filler early on
Once you have a Cauldron, swap fillers for Queens Jam (raspberries plus blueberries) and Carrot Soup for a strong stamina boost.
Swamp and Mountains (mid game)
This is where you should split your trio into a clear role.
- Sausages (high health)
- Turnip Stew (balanced)
- Serpent Stew (top tier health and stamina) if you have hunted a serpent
For the Mountains, Wolf Skewer and Onion Soup are easy to keep stocked and pair well with Sausages.
Plains (late game melee)
- Lox Meat Pie (huge health)
- Blood Pudding (huge stamina, made from bloodbags and barley)
- Fish Wraps or Bread as the third
This is the classic tank loadout for fighting fulings, deathsquitos, and the boss Yagluth.
Mistlands (magic and endgame)
Eitr powers staves and the magic builds. Mistlands cooking unlocks dedicated Eitr foods.
- Yggdrasil Porridge (Eitr)
- Seeker Aspic (Eitr and stamina)
- Mushroom Omelette or Magecap-based dishes (Eitr)
For a hybrid fighter-mage, drop one Eitr food and slot a Plains health food so you do not get one-shot.
Quick tips
- Carry raw ingredients and a portable plan, but cook in batches at home to save time.
- Keep a stack of low-effort foods (Cooked Meat, Honey, Queens Jam) for emergencies.
- Rested buff plus full food makes corpse runs and boss fights far safer.
- Build a small farm and beehive early so you never run dry on carrots, honey, and later barley.
