Building a base that lasts in Subnautica 2
A good base is the difference between exploring confidently and constantly racing back to the surface. In Subnautica 2 your base gives you oxygen, storage, crafting, and a launch point for deeper dives. The two numbers that matter most are hull integrity and power.
This guide reflects the Early Access build. Unknown Worlds is still tuning systems, so values and parts can shift between patches.
Understand hull integrity
Every room and corridor either adds or subtracts from your base's structural strength. If integrity drops below zero, the base springs leaks and floods.
- Multipurpose rooms and corridors cost integrity.
- Reinforcements and bulkheads add integrity.
- Going deeper increases pressure, so deep bases need more reinforcement.
Build a little, check the integrity meter, and reinforce before you expand again. Do not sprawl first and patch later.
Power your base
Without power, your fabricator, lights, and oxygen support go dark. Match the power source to the biome:
- Solar is cheap and reliable in shallow, sunlit water but fades with depth.
- Bioreactors burn organic material, so keep a stock of fish or plants.
- Deeper power options unlock as you scan more tech and push into hotter or richer biomes.
Place power generation close to the base and keep a backup source so a single failure does not flood you out.
Smart layout principles
- Start small. One room with a fabricator, storage, and oxygen is enough for hours.
- Use corridors as spokes. A central hub with short arms is easier to power and reinforce than a long snake.
- Cluster by function. Storage near the entrance, crafting in the core, vehicle bay on the outer edge.
- Leave headroom. Build slightly above the deepest point you plan to explore so you can extend down later.
What to build first
A reliable early order of operations:
- Foundation and one basic room.
- Fabricator and a few storage lockers.
- A solar panel or bioreactor for power.
- An oxygen source so the base refills your tank.
- A vehicle bay once you unlock your first vehicle.
Forward bases for deep dives
As biomes get deeper, a single home base is not enough. Drop small forward bases near the edge of new zones. Each one only needs power, oxygen, and storage. They shorten trips, save oxygen, and give you a safe fallback if a deep dive goes wrong.
